What's the difference between Google search, ChatGPT, and AI agents?
Google is a 'search engine', ChatGPT is an 'answer engine' and Manus is an 'AI agent'. How do I use them?
I use Google for a quick search, ChatGPT for a deeper search or research, sometimes for images, and Manus to perform a task like taking my content and formatting it into slides for a presentation using my brand colors, just to name a few examples.
I also use the answer engines Perplexity, Gemini, Claude (through Perplexity) and Microsoft Copilot in my research. I compare the answers, add my own experience, and come up with my answer.
The table below demonstrates the differences in detail.
| Feature | Search Engines | Answer Engines | AI Agents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Examples | Google, Bing (traditional) | Perplexity AI, ChatGPT, Google Gemini | Manus, Adept |
| Primary Function | Information retrieval | Direct question answering | Autonomous task execution |
| Query Input | Keyword-based queries | Natural language questions | Goal-oriented commands |
| Output Format | Ranked list of hyperlinks | Concise, synthesized answers | Completed tasks or actions |
| Information Processing | Indexes and ranks web pages | Aggregates and summarizes data | Reasons and plans using available tools |
| User Interaction | One-way information retrieval | Conversational Q&A | Collaborative and autonomous |
| Autonomy | None; user-driven | Limited to answering questions | High; can act independently |
Conclusion
What's the difference between doing a Google search and using ChatGPT? And what's the difference between ChatGPT and an AI agent?
Google search comes up with a list of websites you can visit to find what you're looking for. For instance, if you're looking for an accountant, Google will provide a list of accountant websites. Still searching for that accountant? ChatGPT will give you actual names, BUT you have to be very clear in your query. Manus will find and contact the accountant and set up an appointment.
In summary, search engines act as a directory to the vast information on the internet, requiring the user to sift through the results to find what they need. Answer engines take a step further by directly answering user questions, saving time and effort. AI agents represent the next leap, capable of not only providing information but also performing tasks and achieving goals autonomously. Understanding these differences is crucial for leveraging the right tool for the right task in our increasingly AI-driven world.
