What's the difference between Google search, ChatGPT, and AI agents?

By Elizabeth Gearhart, Ph.D. • January 23, 2026

Google is a 'search engine', ChatGPT is an 'answer engine' and Manus is an 'AI agent'. How do I use them?

I use Google for a quick search, ChatGPT for a deeper search or research, sometimes for images, and Manus to perform a task like taking my content and formatting it into slides for a presentation using my brand colors, just to name a few examples.

I also use the answer engines Perplexity, Gemini, Claude (through Perplexity) and Microsoft Copilot in my research. I compare the answers, add my own experience, and come up with my answer.

The table below demonstrates the differences in detail.

Conclusion

What's the difference between doing a Google search and using ChatGPT? And what's the difference between ChatGPT and an AI agent?

Google search comes up with a list of websites you can visit to find what you're looking for. For instance, if you're looking for an accountant, Google will provide a list of accountant websites. Still searching for that accountant? ChatGPT will give you actual names, BUT you have to be very clear in your query. Manus will find and contact the accountant and set up an appointment.

In summary, search engines act as a directory to the vast information on the internet, requiring the user to sift through the results to find what they need. Answer engines take a step further by directly answering user questions, saving time and effort. AI agents represent the next leap, capable of not only providing information but also performing tasks and achieving goals autonomously. Understanding these differences is crucial for leveraging the right tool for the right task in our increasingly AI-driven world.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between a search engine and an answer engine?

Search engines like Google provide a ranked list of website links for you to explore, while answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity AI directly answer your question by synthesizing information from multiple sources into a concise response. Search engines require you to do the research; answer engines do the research for you.

Is ChatGPT a search engine or an answer engine?

ChatGPT is an answer engine, not a search engine. Instead of providing links to websites, ChatGPT directly answers your questions using its trained knowledge and (in some versions) real-time web access. It synthesizes information and provides conversational responses rather than ranked search results.

What can AI agents do that answer engines cannot?

AI agents like Manus can take autonomous action and complete tasks, not just provide information. While answer engines tell you how to do something, AI agents actually do it for you. For example, an answer engine can explain how to build a website, but an AI agent can actually build, deploy, and host the website through natural language commands.

When should I use Google vs ChatGPT vs an AI agent?

Use Google when you want to explore multiple sources and perspectives yourself. Use ChatGPT or Perplexity when you want a direct answer synthesized from multiple sources. Use an AI agent like Manus when you want a task completed autonomously, such as building a website, analyzing data, or executing a multi-step workflow.

Are AI agents going to replace search engines and answer engines?

AI agents represent an evolution rather than a replacement. Each tool serves different purposes: search engines for exploration, answer engines for quick information, and AI agents for task execution. The future likely involves using all three types of tools depending on your specific needs, with AI agents handling increasingly complex workflows while search and answer engines remain valuable for research and information gathering.
